Synopsis
Neriamangalam Power Station was commissioned on 12.04.1961 by the Vice President of India Dr. S Radhakrishnan with two units (Unit 1 & 2). Unit 3 was put on service later in 11.05.1963. Each unit had a capacity of 15 MW. After 43 years of glorious service, renovation and modernization of the units were carried out during the period 2004-06 and re commissioned the Unit 1 on - 20.10.2004, Unit 2 – 30.11.2005 and Unit 3 – 29.09.2006 with an enhanced capacity of 17.5 MW each. The Neriamangalam Extension Scheme is envisaged to utilize 167 MCM. (40%) of the total spill water of Kallarkutty Reservoir to generate 58.27 MU per annum into the existing grid. The Neriamangalam Extension Scheme (1 X 25 MW) Project was dedicated to the nation on 25th May 2008 by the Honorable Chief Minister of Kerala.
Neriamangalam Power Station utilizes water head available in Masonry Dam at Kallarkutty which is constructed in Muthirapuzha stream. This water is conveyed through a tunnel of length 3239.11 Meters, which ends in a surge shaft. One Low Pressure Pipe (LPP) (dia.3.35 M) of 101M length leads the water to the penstocks. 1.60 M diameter penstock for each unit starts from butterfly valve (Internal dia. 1.60 M) at valve house. Water entering to the turbine is controlled by (Internal dia.1100 mm) Spherical valve (Main Inlet Valve) at Power House. One Y-piece pipe was inserted in the LPP to divert water to the Penstock Butterfly Valve located in the new Valve House adjacent to the old Valve House of the old Neriamangalam Power Station to conduct water to NES Power Station. Penstock of 2M diameter and length 435 M for the unit starts from Butterfly Valve at valve house. Water entering to the turbine is controlled by a Main Inlet Valve (Spherical valve) at the Power Station.
Being one of the earliest power stations in the state, Neriamangalam Power station is one of the landmarks in Kerala’s Power Sector. The power station is situated at Panamkutty in the Neriamangalam hill valley. It is located in Idukki District 40 Km from Munnar, the famous tourist destination and the nearest railway station is Aluva, 83Km from power house.
