The SCADA/DMS project for remote controlling and monitoring distribution systems was successfully implemented in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode towns. The main features of SCADA/DMS are Control Centers in Trivandrum, Ernakulam & Kozhikode cities for the real-time monitoring and control of the 11kV distribution network, Remote terminal units (RTU) in 50 substations, Local Data Monitoring system (LDMS) at substations, Feeder Remote Terminal Units (FRTU) in 2994 Ring Main Units (RMU) locations on 11kV feeders, integration with State load dispatch Centre (SLDC), IT Data Centre (ITDC)and Disaster Recovery (DR) center, Advanced distribution management system (ADMS), Schematic and geographical display of 11kV network by integrating with GIS system, Fault location isolation and supply restoration (FLISR) for improved customer service, planned maintenance support, historical storage data for analysis, load flow analysis, etc. The SCADA implementing Agency is M/s Schneider Electric India Pvt. Ltd. Three control center has been made operational in the respective SCADA Towns viz Trivandrum, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode with 50 RTU stations and 2994 FRTUs.
The major key benefits of implementing the SCADA project in Kerala are listed below :
- By implementing SCADA/DMS in three towns, the frequency of Power interruption (SAIFI) and power outage duration (SAIDI) have been drastically reduced.
- Kerala is having a geographically diverse terrain and the implementation of SCADA in 3 towns has benefitted KSEBL for real-time monitoring & control of the 11kV distribution network from the Control Centre. This has proved very much beneficial to the state, especially during torrential rain & natural calamities.
- KSEBL is one of the few utilities in India where the 11kV distribution network is developed in GIS integrated with SCADA, through CIM/XML from GIS. With this, all the ADMS functionalities envisaged in the RFP are in operation.
- The schematic & geographical display of the 11 kV distribution network including the RMU internal diagram is generated for SCADA towns through the integration of the GIS system.
- By implementation of remote operation & FLISR (fault location isolation & supply restoration), the supply restoration time was reduced from hours to a few minutes.
- Integrated 50 SCADA-enabled substations with SLDC at Kalamassery through ICCP integration.
