Vilangad SHEP (3*2.5 MW) is a run of the river scheme utilizing the water of Vaniyampuzha and Kavadipuzha in Mahe river basin. The project area is located in Naripatta grama panchayath and Thinur village, Vadakara taluk in Kozhikode district. The project site is accessible to both weirs, Forebay and Powerhouse by road . The distance from Kozhikode to Project site is 85 km and the nearest Railway station Vadakara is 39 km away from the project. This is the first project in Kerala commissioned with two diversions weirs, two separate canals and a common forebay tank. This is the first project having evacuation through longest 33KV UG cable.
Two weirs, One at Valuk having 7.90m height and 45.59mm length, and one at Panoth having 7.83 m height and 44.50mm length. Valuk Power channel is having a total length of 1750m, this channel is protected with cover slab at slide prone areas and trapezoidal channel with transitions. Panoth Power channel having length of 2850m is also protected with cover slab at slide prone areas and Cut and Cover and box conduit type at steep terrain. Both power channels are RCC open rectangular type.
Enlarged type Forebay tank having a centre pit of 8.40x9.650x11.65m size and capacity is 1757.59m3. Penstock pipe is 262m long and have a diameter of 1.50m3. Feeder pipes are 1m in diameter and 55m in length. The size of over ground powerhouse is48.60x11.10x15.15m and is installed with three generators with 2.5 MW each with Horizontal Francis Turbine. The size of tailrace pool is 25.70x23m the switch yard is having 25m length and 23m width. There is a surplus channel of size 1.60 x 1.50 m upto the quarry and 2 x 1.70 m and then 4 x 2.80m for the last 18m with total length of 346m including bell mouth. The total cost for implementation of Vilangad Small Hydro Electric Project is Rs.68.19 crore
