Lower Periyar Power House is the fourth biggest genrating station of Kerala and one of the most important tie stations in the power grid of Kerala.  The installed capacity of th station is 3x60 MW and there are 6 nos. 220 kV feeders.  This is the first generating station in KSEB using microprocessor-controlled loggic circuit for the automatic operation of the generators from shutdown status to generator status and from generator status to shutdown status.  These machines are designed for synchronous condenser operation also.  The 220 kV feeders from Lower Periyar Power House are 1) double circuit feeder to Idukki Power House 2) single circuit feeder to 400/220 kV Substation, Madakkathara 3) single circuit feeder to 220 kV Substation Chalakkudy and 4) double circuit feeder to 220 kV Sub Station, Brahmapuram.  The 220 kV bus of Lower Periyar Power House is the main interlinking bus for the five most important major grid stations of KSEB viz. Idukki Power House Switchyard, 400 kV Substation, Madakkathara, 220 kV Substation, Chalakkudy and 220 kV Substation, Brahmapuram, which is directly tied with Kayamkulam thermal station.  Thus, any bottleneck in this station will adversely affect the secure and smooth grid operation of KSEB.
