Kuttiyadi Hydro Electric Project

Capacity -225 MW

Kuttiady Hydro Electric Project  is owned, operated and controlled by KSEBL and is installed for harnessing water of Kuttiady River. The power house is located at Chakkittapara Village and Koorachundu Panchayath under Quilandy Taluk in Kozhikode District of Kerala State. This is the sole major hydel scheme in the northern region of Kerala and it is the third highest ranked, vis-à-vis installed capacity, among the power generating stations owned by KSEB. The power house was commenced with three generators of FUJI, Japan make with an installed capacity of 25 MW each and is in commercial operation since 1972.

Later in 2001 an extension scheme was introduced which was named as Kuttiady Extension Scheme(KES) to harness the full annual inflow of 210 MCM  against dam storage capacity of 34 MCM . Under this scheme an additional 1 X 50 MW generator of GE, Canada make installed by bifurcating the existing penstock near to the power house. The Kuttiady Augmentation Scheme of diverting water from Banasurasagar Dam at Thariode through a tunnel to Kakkayam Dam was also carried out during that period

Two numbers BHEL make generators of capacity 50 MW each were installed and commissioned in 2010  by providing separate water conducting system for utilizing the complete storage of Thariode and Kakkayam reservoirs  . These Generators were erected under a consortium of BHEL and L&T.

The tail race water of Generators #1, 2, 3 & 4 are diverted to a canal and is harnessed for power generation in Kuttiady Tail Race. Similarly tail race water from Generators #5 & 6 are  to be used for power generation in KSHEP

Water from two dams is harnessing for generation of electricity from KHEP, the Kakkayam dam and Thariode dam. 

Catchment Area

The catchment area is the maximum rainfall collection area of the reservoir. For Kakkayam dam it is 39 Square kilometer and for Thariode dam it is 61.44 square kilometer. The average rain fall at Kakkayam and Thariode is 671 cm and 624.7 cm respectively.  It provides about 165 million tones of water for power generation every year.  Every ton of water harnessed by the scheme will generate 1.48 units of energy.

Kakkayam Dam
The dam was constructed across the Kuttiady river , located above Orakuzhy falls.  It is a masonry straight gravity dam with a height of 39.6 m above deepest foundation and with this height it ranks the 7th position in Kerala.  Length at top is 228.6 m and width is 5.18 m.  It has a storage capacity of 34 Million tones.  The unfavorable foundation conditions with no rocks for a considerable height on the left bank necessitated the provision of many novel features for the dam such as directed spill way, rejectory, relief tunnel, etc.  The full reservoir level is 757.72 m and the minimum draw down level is 737.62 m. The average head of the development is 658 meters and the designed firm energy is 248 MU.

Thariode Dam
Thariode dam is an earth dam commissioned on 2005. The full reservoir level is 775.60 m and the minimum draw down level is 754.86 m with a live storage of 185.5 million cubic meter and gross storage capacity of 209 MCM of water. A 4.678 km long ‘D’ shaped discharge tunnel is provided to Kakkayam dam with a discharge capacity of 10. 5 cubic metre per second.
