During 1917 Investigation of power generation possibilities of chalakkudy river started by British Westing House Electrical Manufacturing company. In 1951 Preliminary report on economic power generation by diverting sholayar water is submitted by Sri. V. Ranganathan , EE, Dams Dvn Mattupetti. During the tenure 1954-55 Administrative sanction was obtained from Travancore Cochin government For 435 Lakhs having number 12627/55/PWC/24-11-1955. Preliminary works such as construction of all roads, Buildings were completed in the year 1958-1961.During 1966-1968 all the 3 machines were put into operation. The maxhinery comprises of a vertical shaft Francis turbine made by M/s. Titovizavody Litostroj, Yugoslovia and a generator manufactured by M/s Rade Koncar Yugoslovia.The total expenditure for the project was approximately 695Lakhs at the time of completion including 45 Lakhs for Transmission system.
After the completion of 52 years of successful running Administrative sanction obtained for Renovation and Modernization of Sholayar Generators and Penstock. Renovation works of Generator and allied parts were awarded to M/s Yuvan-Flovel Consortium in year 2015 for an agreement amount of 61.5 crores. Renovation works of penstock was awarded to M/s PES Engineers. Renovation of all three machines completed during the tenure 2019-2021.
