Commissioning of Tottiyar Hydro Electric Project.

The 40 MW Tottiyar Hydroelectric Project was inaugurated on October 28, 2024, at the Lower Periyar Hydroelectric Project Courtyard by Honorable Chief Minister Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan, who dedicated it to the nation. The project utilizes water from the Deviyar, a tributary of the Periyar River. It consists of two electric generators with capacities of 30 MW and 10 MW, respectively. The plant is expected to generate 99 million units of electricity annually.

The power source for this project is a dam constructed across the Deviyar at Walara, along with an associated reservoir. The dam, which is 222 meters long and 7.5 meters high, stores water that flows through a 60-meter-long canal and then through a 199-meter-long tunnel to reach a 1,252-meter-long penstock. Water rushing through the penstock from a height of 474.3 meters drives the vertical shaft Pelton turbines located in the powerhouse.

The Thottiyar Powerhouse is situated on the banks of the Periyar River in Mannakandam village, within the Devikulam taluk of Neendapara. The construction is designed so that the water, after generating electricity, is discharged back into the Periyar River. The total construction cost of the Tottiyar project is Rs 188 crores. The electricity generated from the two generators at Tottiyar is at a voltage of 11 kV, which is then transformed to 220 kV before being transmitted to the switchyard and subsequently to the Lower Periyar-Chalakkudy 220 kV line.

The Peruvannamoozhi project, which was constructed with an investment of Rs 81.47 crore, is also the 10th small hydropower project in the Kozhikode district.
