Rising Electrical Hazards Demand Vigilance

Press Release

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has issued a critical warning to the public, emphasizing the increasing prevalence of electrical hazards. In light of a surge in electrical accidents, KSEB underscores the need for strict adherence to safety guidelines.

As per recent data, there have been a distressing 265 reported electrical accidents this year, resulting in the tragic loss of 121 lives. Shockingly, these incidents encompass a variety of scenarios, including 10 fatalities stemming from illegal electrical work, 17 individuals succumbing to earth leakage within consumer premises, 15 cases of electric shock while utilizing metal ladders in proximity to power lines, and 15 people shocked by electric fences. Additionally, 7 individuals lost their lives due to electric shock while participating in festival celebrations.

Many of these unfortunate accidents could have been prevented had proper electrical safety protocols been followed. An effective precaution against electrical leakage is the installation of Residual Current Circuit Breakers (RCCBs or ELCBs) at the outset of electrical wiring. In situations where electrical equipment experiences accidental current flow due to insulation failure or other issues, RCCBs serve as protective devices, swiftly halting the flow of electricity to the affected device and circuit, thus averting potential electric shocks. It's important to note that what is commonly referred to as an Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) in our country is, in fact, an RCCB.

Furthermore, exercising extreme caution when lighting lamps during festival celebrations is paramount. The use of substandard, plastic-insulated wires and accessories poses significant dangers. For safety, "Deepalangaram" rituals should be conducted exclusively on metallic surfaces, adhering to established safety standards. Making electrical connections by inserting needles or safety pins into wire joints without proper insulation is perilous and should be avoided. Prior to conducting decorative work near KSEB electrical installations, it is imperative to obtain permission from the respective Section Office. Dipalankara work should only be entrusted to contractors approved by the Electrical Inspectorate.

KSEB also emphasizes that under no circumstances should metal troughs or ladders be used in proximity to power lines. This is a critical warning to ensure the safety of all concerned.
